  • One of Correctional Service Canada’s key roles is to provide victims of federal offenders with information about the offender who harmed them. This website is one tool victims can use to find easy-to-access, up-to-date information as they interact with the criminal justice and correctional systems.

Court/Law

• Emergency Protection Orders
  • An Emergency Protection Order (EPO) provides legal protection to victims of family violence – it is not a criminal charge. An Emergency Protection Order can order an abuser not to go to places where the victim regularly goes, not to communicate with the victim. The Order can allow the victim to stay in the home and order the abuser to leave. It can also address other conditions necessary to provide for the immediate protection of the victim. There is no cost to obtain an Emergency Protection Order. Victims, Children’s Services caseworkers and police can all apply for an EPO. Victims can also apply for an Order directly at provincial Court during court hours.

• Queens Bench Protection Order
  • A Queen’s Bench Protection Order covers the same types of things that an EPO does however where an EPO is for the immediate safety of a victim of family violence, a Queen’s Bench Protection Order can be issued for up to one year. Additional conditions can also be set through the Queen’s Bench Protection Order.
