History

  • On May 15, 1992 as part of a provincial conference for victim assistance programs, a work session was held to explore the need for the development of a provincial association of victim assistance programs in Alberta.
  • Participants at that session included Municipal and RCMP members; civilian directors of police-based victim service programs; Family and Community Support Services; directors of women’s shelters; sexual assault counselors; board members from police-based programs offering victim services; a Crown Prosecutor and Government representation.
  • It was quickly established that it was essential to create an organization exclusive to the needs of police based victim assistance programs in Alberta.
  • This new association would allow the existing 14 police-based programs to share information and support the growth and development of their programs.
  • As more programs were established, the Association would provide guidance and support.
  • In September 1994, the Alberta Police Based Victim Services Association held the first meeting and began working on a mandate that would include information sharing; development of consistent standards for programs; staff training; professional development and education of policy makers and the public.
