History

  • On May 15, 1992 as part of a provincial conference for victims’ assistance programs, a work session was held to explore the need for the development of a provincial association of victims’ assistance programs in Alberta.
  • Participants at this session included RCMP members, civilian directors of police based Victim Services programs, Family and Community Support Services, directors of women’s shelters, sexual assault counselors, board members from programs offering victims’ services, a crown prosecutor and Government representation.
  • It was quickly established that there was a need for an organization specific to the police based victims’ assistance programs.
  • This association would allow the existing 14 police based program to assist and support each other as programs developed. It would provide a coordinated mechanism for information sharing and resource development between the programs. It would also provide assistance and guidance to those communities as they establish new programs.

In 2008, Alberta Victim Services:

  • Operates 117 Police based Victim Services Units across Alberta
  • Provides service to over 60,000 victims of crime (2007)
  • With 1767 volunteers contributing over 200,000 hours providing information, support and referrals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
